I believe that one of the admins enabled the feature because they were bored. I believe people have been using them just like they have been using the rest of the forum, pretty much randomly wandering around clicking arbitrary things.

Well, I'm no admin, but I'd say the higher your number, the more people like you, and the lower your number, the less people like you. But it's no biggie if you has negative karma, just do drugs or drink or something like in high school.

Karma tends to be a bad idea in forums because it frequently devolves into people anonymously attempting to deal with problems by smiting a person at every opportunity instead of discussing the issue. As long as it remains nothing but a toy, it's fine, but someone inevitably decided to take it to an extreme and because of the anonymous nature of the buttons, the person being smited is likely to feel that the entire forum is out to get them.

It might actually be a useful system if it only goes in the positive direction, IE you only add to someone's karma if they make a helpful post or answer your question.
