HAI GUYS. I thought some of you might be interested in reading this, i'm not sure if any of you are MTG Salvation Forum trolls like i am but i saw this an went all giggly.
This idea is VERY compelling.
I'll summarize (yes copy+pasting, so don't give me any credit for this) it here:
Here's the concept:
A long list of "interesting matchups" will be made ahead of time. For the most part, generals will be about tier 2: there won't be any stupid vanilla ones like Lady Orca, and there won't be many obviously top tier generals. They will all be "build-around-me" generals.
Examples of interesting matchups might include pairings like Sharuum the Hegemon vs Glissa Sunseeker, Tibor and Lumia vs Rhys the Redeemed, Captain Sisay vs Tsabo Tavoc or Empress Galina. Maybe even something like Vendilion Clique vs Dosan the Falling Leaf.
Here's where it gets fun. At the beginning of each round, Pairings will be announced, not only who plays who, but what general each player must use. Generals will be assigned randomly within each pairing. Everyone has a few days to build their deck, and then the rest of the week to play the match.
I anticipate that "metagaming" will be extremely important here. Netdecking won't get you anywhere: because you're building your deck just to beat one specific opponent, you can be a lot more specific in your answers.
I'll mention here that this tournament will use a separate banlist: I think that many banned cards will be fine in this context, but all color-hosers will be banned: any card that does something negative only to specific colors or basic land types will be banned, as they're all way too good when you know your opponent's colors.
There's a neat psychological element to this kind of pairing: if you think you know how your opponent is going to attack you, you should try to blank that plan by pursuing an unorthodox strategy. For instance, if your opponent is prepared for you to bring mono-blue control, but you're actually playing Blue Skies aggro, some kind of combo, or artifact synergies, that gives you a tremendous advantage. To succeed in this tournament, each player will have to try to anticipate what his opponent will do, and be able to build a deck that will beat that strategy.
After each round, new pairings will be made, and everyone gets a different general of course. I have some ideas to make the last few matches especially strange as well.
If you don't have cards necessary for the deck that you will be playing you can borrow/trade, or proxy-lists could be made, if there was general agreement on the number of proxies etc.
So, what do you think? Does anyone but me find this idea appealing? This tournament definitely requires much more effort from participants, as you have to quickly design a new deck every week, but I think it should be a lot of fun, and will put to the test deckbuilding skills that are often ignored.
