Alright, stepping in here as moderator. This thread has been borderline for a while now. I'm going to leave it open and hope that it doesn't turn into a pissing match.
Magic is a game, We play the game because we enjoy it. I'm not going to comment on the game last night because while I was there, I wasn't paying attention to it. All I will say is that it is sad that it seems to be having a negative impact.
I would agree with the comments of several people in that it is just a game. Instead of saying to just drop it I would suggest that instead people just try to put it in perspective. Casual magic at the club is something that has been rather vague for a while. There are a lot of good players in the club, and it has been generally decided that while the format could be a lot more competitive than it is now, for general pick up Magic, it tends to be more casual. There is nothing wrong with taking it up a level, but it in some situations if your opponent's deck is bad, it's because they have chosen to make it bad.
So before this gets too involved, I'll end it. Stranger, if you choose to stick around, welcome to the forums. To everyone, if this wants to stay as a discussion, that's fine, if it turns into anything more, I'm with Max: take it to the PMs.

did you guys have fun in that game? did you enjoy beating the sh*t out of each other's decks? if you did not find that game enjoyable then maybe you should rethink your deck and who you play with.
running things like holy day are legit because it makes people "say what was he thinking" as the card proceeds to prevent them from dieing. to some that is the ultimate accomplishment.

I have more fun playing 1v1 against Will Anderson even when he destroys all my lands than playing in a stalemate game. It's obvious people have different definitions of fun as seen in the "what do you do to make edh as fun as possible?" thread. Some people like pve, and other people like pvp in gaming. The reason I might seem so harsh against some other things is because I've been playing in other games in competitive environments for a long time where the word "casual" is dirty. I apologize for any bad feelings this may cause to those who prefer pve/casual games.

I think some of the people in the club should figure out how to drop their reputation, rather then whine about how nobody likes them Or, at least online, you can create a separate forum, have a separate part of the card generation complex, and work more efficiently than the original thing you were based on (No offense intended, Foghat, but it's true). I would say that it should be an effort on both parts. Certain people in club have particularly bad reputations due to their playstyles or personalities (i.e. ______ is a whiny bitch or _____ only plays OP decks).* Those people can and should work on at least slightly improving what it is about what they do that people dislike. At the same time, others can understand that it is difficult to change something that one may or may not actually realize or want to believe about one's self and that on some level we all just want to play the game. *If you really really want to know who the main people are or if you are one of the main people, just PM members of club and ask for their honest opinions.

I meant in general in gaming. ex: raids and dungeons in mmorpgs and single player in others rather than cutthroat MLG-type "kill every other team" gaming.

Well getting back to fred's question. I think that personally all you have to do is get in a different mind set. Don't Overextend and don't be the largest threat. Yet still have a board presence and the ability to control the field. In other words, You may be the largest threat, but you don't reveal it. Exagerate someone else as a threat larger than you. (I.E. "I my have an obelisk of alara but that guy just played a pellaka wurm") Downplay your threats and upgrade theirs. I was playing at magic club a few months ago and Will (Scarecrow decks) was playing his wurm deck. There where two other players. Will preceded to ramp and play lots of wurms. I had on the field about 5 soldiers and a knight captain of eos. I could holy day 5 times. Will seeing that it would be a waste attacking me attacks someone else first for lethal. I proceed to holy day. I did this for 2 reasons. My deck was not going to get through his wall of wurms and my fliers would take too much time. The other deck had a method to do massive damage to will. the second reason was to make an ally (Not like he wasn't one already since will had clear board advantage). This game was over in my favor with will being pissed off because I holy dayed for someone else. So first fred, you are going to have to loose a few games in order to not seem like such a threat from the get go. Then if you do it right, even if you decks are powerful, you will never seem that much of a threat. Or even if your decks are not that great you will still win. There is a second option. I know someone in my playgroup who is really good at magic. He pretty much always runs control and is notorious for his power. He still wins almost every time. His presence creates such a great presence that you know that if you piss him off you are as good as dead. That you are only playing this game and are only alive because he is letting you. Sadly enough my friends believed that this was true. I attack him and yeah, I get wrecked. I convince another guy to attack him at the same time and then he becomes human again. So if you want you could make your decks so devastating that people will think twice before attacking you. This is most likely only a temporary measure since your indestructibility may falter. Just make it so that if any player shows even the tiniest amount of aggression towards you, they will have a bad day. So those are two strategies that i could think up of. I do play magic to win and have fun. But if I don't win, well i still had fun. damn this was long...
