So, playing with local playgroup and the discard step came up.
I claim that even if you draw after the "discard step" at end of turn, there is a "cleanup phase" of some sort that you can't get around discarding down to 7 on your turn.
They think that there is no such thing and you keep your entire hand until the next turn.
So im positive im right, but then again i could be wrong. If they are wrong, it probably won't change how they play, but if im wrong, i've been playing wrong for awhile.

You are right. During the cleanup step you discard down to seven cards (as well as some other things that happen). If an effect triggers after that step, you have another cleanup step. Since I don't feel like typing this all on a phone, here is a link: wiki.mtgsalvation.com/article/Cleanup_step
