I'm not smart enough to figure this out myself.
What's the correct way to play Distant Memories?
(Yes, I know the correct answer is "Don't.". So save yourself the keystrokes. )

you play it as a facade. you get something of medium power that is ok in the situation you are in but not important to your overall strategy. basically make the choice as hard as possible for your opponent without getting rid of something important from your deck. you may also use it to try and bluff your opponent into getting what you want by putting out something that seems not very good in the situation (like an unsummon for something easy to play when you have a counter in hand) or get something that seems like it would be good but isn't really.

I would say, either this is a diabolic tutor if the thing your tutoring isn't obviously game-changing, like getting an o-stone on a cluttered board or insurrection, or it is a harmonize. I would honestly say unless you are trying to trick your opponents, going for your normal 'best choice' and just turn this into a harmonize. If you want it to work as a tutor, you probably want to have it synergize with your hand in a way your opponents can't see (aka, a combo they don't realize you will have).
It gets a bit more tricky in a singleton deck because you will loose the card your getting, so that requires you to think what you'd be will to lose in order to draw 3 cards. I just look at this card as either Concentrate or diabolic tutor for a card that doesn't help you immensely (at least from your opponents point of view).

I was hoping for a better answer. Combo element aside, why would you tutor for a medium power card? In that case I'd rather just draw the card. I was hoping for a better answer, alas, there seems not to be one.
Unless it's to tutor for a card everyone wants played.

grab diabolic tutor. Replace this card with concentrate or intuition. But generally-- just dont run this card.

I would grab stuff like Font of Mythos, Rites of Flourishing, or other cards that benefit everyone. Then again, I would run those cards and not everyone would.

Everyone will think you are up to something and let you draw three cards. Alternatively, tutor for Concentrate. Same reason.

If I tutor for concentrate then I've wasted a turn and 4 mana and everyone's time tutoring.
